My old dog Kai always had a hard time at the vets. We only visited if absolutely necessary due to stress. Meaning it had been quite some time. Thankfully he’s physically been a very fit and health dog. He had an episode one evening but came round and toddled off down the garden. the next morning it became clear at almost 14yrs there was an issue. due to his age and sudden rear end lameness, we decided we would not put him through testing, medication etc. and an end of life appointment would be the kinder thing to do. Due to him not liking the vets, we decided to change vets for this occasion. So that he wouldn’t be stressed out and would be more interested in being somewhere new. Dewsbury were very understanding on the phone when making the appointment. We got Kai’s records sent from our usual vet. On the day (4th July) he walked in (assisted) and was excited to see new people and even dogs (he never really liked dogs). There was no anxiety which was a big concern as I didn’t want his stressed in his final moments.Staff were very empathetic. The room we were put in was clean and comforting. The was a large comfy mat with blanket for Kai to lay on. The vet was lovely. Kai was sedated before the procedure as he hated his legs touching. Then came the time to say goodbye. We were able to hold him throughout and he passed very quickly and peacefully. He was definitely ready. We were given as long as we wanted to stay with him after. During which we did our own paw prints. Trimmed his nails (a real struggle usually) and being a husky x kelpie in heavy shed, brushed out some of his fur to have put inside a teddy. It was heartbreaking saying goodbye to our family member of 12yrs since rescue. But was very dignified and respectful. The care from staff made it that little easier. We chose private cremation and I collected Kai and brought him home Monday 14th. The staff member who brought him to me, carried the box containing his ashes like he was made of glass. She was so gentle and sweet. Thank you to everyone involved. The house is so quiet without Kai’s kelpie yip, despite having 3 more dogs (who are coping better than expected). I will certainly be using Dewsbury when the inevitable comes round again. - Emma Colton
